Day 1 – Christchurch Airport to Aoraki Mt Cook National Park

Travel time: 4 hours

It’s real; your three-week honeymoon in New Zealand has begun! Pick up your rental car from the Christchurch Airport then head on the road, as you have a lot to cover on the South Island.

Day 2 – Explore Aoraki Mt Cook National Park

Day 3 – Aoraki Mt Cook to Oamaru

Travel time: 2h40mins

Day 7 – Te Anau to Milford Sound

Travel time: 1h30mins

Often described as one of the most scenic roads in New Zealand, the Milford Road is best taken slowly (i.e. by taking many stops; not driven at 20km/h). Day 8 – Milford Sound to Queenstown

You lucky twosome get to experience the Milford Road again today, stopping by any of the sights or short walks you might have missed on the way in.

Day 10 – Queenstown to Haast

Travel time: 2h50mins

Day 16 – Kaikoura to Wellington

Travel time: 2 hours drive then 3h30mins ferry

Book a sunset sailing on the Picton-to-Wellington ferry this evening. Not only because it’s more romantic but because that will give you time to stop in Blenheim for a wine tour of New Zealand’s largest wine region (more info on Viator and Tripadvisor).

Then, it’s onto the ferry for a stunning sunset sailing through the Marlborough Sounds and onwards to the North Island, where you’re likely to collapse in a hotel suite somewhere in the capital.

If you’d rather miss the whole wine thing in Blenheim out, then take an earlier ferry so that you have time to explore Wellington a little more. Day 17 – Wellington to Ohakune

Set your sights on Ohakune at the base of New Zealand’s largest volcano, Mt Ruapehu. Day 18 – Explore Ohakune

Day 19 – Ohakune to Rotorua

Travel time: 2h30mins

You have quite the epic journey ahead of you as you cross the volcanic-formed landscapes of the Central North Island. Keep your fingers crossed for a clear day to soak in the magnificent views of three dramatic volcanoes.
