Some venues realise that backpackers love a good deal. Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city, offers several ways to party without breaking the bank.
First, keep your Wednesday nights open for the Frenzi Bar Crawl. Usually starting at The Muddy Farmer on Wyndham Street at 8 pm, the crawl takes you to four different bars and includes four free drinks (typically beer or vodka mixers). There are often additional “Frenzi Friday” events throughout the year as well. Throughout the night, you can compete for big-ticket prizes like bungy jumps or bus passes. Tickets generally start at NZ$15 online, making it a popular way for travellers to meet.
Cassette 9 on Vulcan Lane remains a favourite for its enigmatic atmosphere and “teapot” cocktails. While its legendary Tuesday nights have evolved, it still hosts regular themed parties and live music, including the long-running indie-dance night “Teenage Kicks” on Wednesdays.
