Whether you’re kipping in a tent, sleeping in the back of your car, or all kitted up in a self-contained campervan, you’ll find somewhere to camp for free in Taupō. Just make sure it is the correct location for your vehicle-type, which is explained in the points below.

1. Reids Farm
A popular free campsite nestled alongside the scenic Waikato River, Hipapatua Recreational Reserve (Reid’s Farm) offers a picturesque spot for both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles, as well as tent camping. The site provides basic toilet facilities and is a stone’s throw from Taupō.
Campers should note that the main lower camping area closes annually for maintenance between May and September. During this time, signage directs visitors to a smaller, upper camping area that remains open. Day use of the lower reserve and river access aren’t affected by these works.
We love that this free campsite allows a maximum stay of three nights and/or four days in any 14-night period, giving travellers ample time to explore the area’s attractions.
Location: Signposted along Huka Falls Road, Taupō, Waikato, North Island. Just out of Taupō town centre.

Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Maraetai, Mangakino Recreation Reserve offers a picturesque freedom camping spot suitable for both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles.
This lakeside haven is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts and water sports lovers.
Campers can stay for up to three nights before making way for fellow freedom campers.
The reserve provides basic amenities including toilets and non-drinking water, ensuring a comfortable stay amidst nature’s splendour.
Location: Mangakino Recreation Reserve, Mangakino, Waikato, North Island. Situated on the western shore of Lake Maraetai.

If you are travelling in a certified self-contained vehicle, you can camp anywhere in the Taupō district for a maōimum of three nights/four days that is controlled or managed by the council.
This is with the exception of Ferry Road and reserves. Where freedom camping is banned, there are obvious signs.

For a tranquil camping experience just a short drive from Taupō, Whakaipo Bay offers a serene retreat. This freedom camping area is exclusively for certified self-contained vehicles, allowing a maximum stay of four nights per month.
We love the unspoiled views of Lake Taupō and the surrounding farm park. As we discovered first-hand, it’s a great spot for mountain biking enthusiasts, with a track winding through native bush.
The bay’s peaceful atmosphere makes it perfect for those seeking a quiet escape from the busier areas.
Location: 10 km (6 mi) from Taupo. Drive through Acocia Bay and take Mapara Road, then turn off at the DOC signpost for Whakaipo Bay. Follow the well-maintained pumice road to the camping area.

Just a 10-minute drive from Taupō, the Huka-Aratiatia Dam Car Park offers a perfect spot for free camping and exploring the stunning Waikato River. We love the beautiful walking trails along the river, and if you time it right, you might catch the impressive dam release – a sight that never fails to amaze us!
Overnight camping is allowed for a maximum of four nights, but spaces are limited. According to our travel manager, Robin, it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot. While basic toilet facilities are available, they’re locked overnight, so self-contained vehicles are recommended.
