4. Rail Trail Retreat Loft
One of the most affordable holiday homes in the area, Rail Trail Retreat Loft is a one-bedroom cottage sleeping up to four guests. You get the whole top floor of the cottage to yourself with a private entrance. 5. Muddy Creek Cutting
Another affordable stay along the Otago Central Rail Trail, Muddy Creek Cutting can be found in Lauder, approximately 35km (22 miles) from Alexandra. This B&B accommodation is set in a charming 1930s mudbrick farmhouse, cheerfully modernised with five guest rooms with colourful decor and local artwork adorning the walls. The B&B has two bathrooms for guests to share, as well as a lounge with a piano and open fire, a fully-equipped kitchen and gorgeous gardens.

8. Clyde Holiday Park
Set among the sporting grounds of historic Clyde, Clyde Holiday Park offers reasonably-priced cabins and camping sites for tents and campervans. If you don’t have your own camping gear, stay in one of the basic cabins, either with a triple or five-bed set-up. Cabins have a bottom sheet and pillow (you may need to ask for a duvet), small fridge, microwave and basic crockery and cutlery which you can use to spruce up meals at the communal kitchen. Halfway between Clyde and Alexandra sits this cosy and affordable retreat in Earnscleugh.
